A Week and Change

I am still doing well here, and again am running out of internet time. I went to my first Nicaraguan baseball game this morning and it was fantastic. Everyone had a uniform of some sort, just not matching. Pinstripe pants and MLB jerseys though along with paid umpires. There are also people who ride up on bikes (mind you this is in the middle of small dirt roads) and with ice cream carts to sell frescos in small plastic bags with a straw. Overall, while I was trying to gain some sports vocabulary all I learned was that Out, Safe and Foul go beyond linguistic boundaries.

Training has been amazingly helpful! Among other things, I have begun to learn how to grow food in a tropical environment, how to make a fungiside out of liquidized smoke, a 14 day method for a fermented organic fertilizer and the general structure of effective community banking (local microlending). I am very excited to keep going and hope all is well at home. How about them Wings?

  1. It was great to hear your voice today, buddy. You sound like you're doing well.I'm glad you found a guitar to borrow...that will serve you well. I'd love to hear your banjo playing at the church. That'll wake 'em up! Take care. Love, Dad

  2. Them Wings are ticking along just fine at the moment, despite some injuries (and dubious refereeing).

Maybe you should start umping games down there? Your strike call is equally incomprehensible in all languages!

  3. Another interested message. I'm glad you are doing OK. Sounds like you are busy. Your Mom @ Dad, Matty and Kyle took me to Cozy Inn sat eve. for my birthday. Missed you being there with us. Terry and Leslie came up yesterday so your Mom cooked dinner and bake me a cake so I had 2 birthdays. Not bad huh? Looking forward to your next message. Love you. Grandma Patsy.

  5. We had a very nice weekend. Dad has his first softball game tonight anlthough it's rainy and cool. I'm thinking they'll be rained out. I am amazed at how many people ask about you, the whole community seems pleased to have you as a representative of this county. Love Mom.

  6. Could you feel the earthquake? There was a 7.1 in Northeastern Hondurus, not that close but sometimes the shock really travels.

The Wings are going to the finals.

  8. Unfortunately, you are right in saying "how bout those Wings?" I'm watching Game 2 of the Cup finals here and I guess I should let you know that the Wings are up 3-1 in the 3rd, looking to go up 2-0 in the series.

Aside from that, Fudge recently told me about your blog and this is the first time I've logged on! I'm caught up on your entries now. Glad to hear that you are safe and sound, and looking forward to hearing more from you in the future!

Now that you've seen some baseball games down there, maybe it's time to introduce folks to wiffle ball?

  9. Leslie and I were talking about the family reunion with Maggie yesterday and she asked if you would be there. Then she said "because he's in Nicaragua. That's in Central America. I was really listening" Or something very close to that.
